The Tropical Tree House @ Rincón Puerto Rico

The Sunset Hooch

The Sunset Hooch

When I was a kid, I always wanted a tree house. In fact, as an adult, I wanted to live up in the trees like the Swiss Family Robinson. I mean, come on! It’s a tree! So when I heard there was a tree house hotel in the west coast of Puerto Rico it was just a matter of time before I had my very own tree house experience.  As soon as the opportunity presented itself, we headed down to Rincón, Puerto Rico (one of the best surf spots on the island, btw) to spend a night on the famous bamboo hooches.

Let me just start by saying it was well worth the experience.  The place is magical. Jo and Theresa built their very own bamboo forest in the middle of Rincón, and amidst the trees, plantains, and bamboo, they created a self-sustainable concept that is beyond anything you can imagine.

The Hooch is a conical shaped building made of bamboo and wood. It runs on solar panels and rechargeable batteries. It has a small kitchenette and bathroom on the bottom floor. Jo NY 2012 _2013-01-06_083and Theresa have equipped it with everything you need: small stove, coffee pot, pans and small sink. The bed upstairs has a mosquito net for a comfortable sleeping experience. And trust me, I slept better than ever. I never sleep well on other beds. Not even in fancy hotels with the pillows and comforters, but amidst the branches in the hooch, my dreams took me to very pleasant places.

I awoke to birds singing and a golden sunrise. After a good cup of coffee we headed down the trails to explore.

There were random swings spread across the property, where you could relax and enjoy the breeze, take a nap or do whatever. Really nice!

I want to go back and stay at one of the other hooches. They are all different. Ours was the Luna Hooch. It’s small, but very cozy. The Sunset Hooch was a little bigger, with a separate building for the bathroom and the Buddha Hooch was huge! Too bad it was rented and we couldn’t go up… Maybe next time.

So if you’re looking to have a romantic, unusual adventure, this is a must do. I urge even the
